Carbon Reduction Plan

1. Executive Summary
Gables UK Ltd is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and operating sustainably across all roofing projects. As a contractor with significant transport and material-related emissions, our goal is to cut our operational carbon by 50% by 2035 and achieve net-zero across all emissions by 2050. This plan outlines practical, industry-relevant strategies to achieve that.

2. Baseline Emissions (2024)
Emission Source Emissions (tCO₂e)
Scope 1 (Company vehicles, site fuel use) 600
Scope 2 (Electricity – offices & warehouse) 100
Scope 3 (Materials, transport, waste, subcontractors) 1,500
Total 2,200

3. Emissions Reduction Targets
• By 2035:
o 50% reduction in Scope 1 & 2
o 30% reduction in Scope 3 (mainly transport, materials, and waste)
• By 2050:
o Net-zero across all scopes, including supply chain

4. Sector-Specific Carbon Reduction Measures
A. Vehicles and Site Equipment (Scope 1)
• Fleet Electrification: Replace diesel vans with electric vehicles (EVs) as leases expire.
• Fuel Efficient Practices: Implement anti-idling policies and regular engine maintenance.
• Mobile Generators: Trial solar-powered site generators to reduce diesel use.
🔧 Target: 80% of company vehicles electric or hybrid by 2035.
________________________________________

B. Office & Warehouse Energy Use (Scope 2)
• Switch to Renewable Energy: Use green electricity tariffs or install solar panels on warehouses.
• Upgrade Equipment: Replace inefficient HVAC and lighting systems with energy-efficient alternatives.
🏢 Target: 100% renewable electricity for fixed premises by 2030.
________________________________________
C. Materials & Procurement (Scope 3)
• Low-Carbon Materials: Prioritise suppliers offering recycled or lower-emission roofing products (e.g. reclaimed slate).
• Local Sourcing: Minimise emissions from transport by choosing regional suppliers where feasible.
• Eco-Roofing Options: Expand offerings in green roofs, solar roof tiles, and cool roofing solutions.
📦 Target: 20% of materials sourced with EPD (Environmental Product Declarations) by 2027.
________________________________________
D. Waste Management
• Construction Waste Segregation: Implement strict site-level recycling protocols (tiles, insulation, timber).
• Partnerships: Work with licensed recyclers to reuse old materials (e.g. slate, timber).
• Client Education: Help clients understand sustainable disposal options for tear-off material.
♻️ Target: 75% of job site waste diverted from landfill by 2028.
________________________________________
E. Subcontractors and Supply Chain
• Green Partner Program: Work with subcontractors who follow environmental best practices.
• Carbon Clause in Contracts: Require reporting of emissions for major suppliers/subcontractors.
• Tool Sharing: Reduce duplication of emissions-intensive tools between sites.
🔗 Target: 50% of subcontracted work aligned with sustainability standards by 2035.
________________________________________
5. Employee Engagement & Training
• Toolbox talks on fuel efficiency, recycling, and sustainability.
• Create incentives for carpooling and use of public transport.
• Provide green skills training (e.g. installing solar tiles or green roofing systems).
👷 Target: 100% workforce trained on carbon reduction practices by 2026.
________________________________________
6. Offsetting (Short-Term)
• Offset unavoidable emissions with verified schemes (e.g. reforestation or construction waste reuse credits).
• Focus on offsetting diesel use and embedded emissions in roofing materials.
________________________________________
7. Monitoring, Reporting & Governance
• Appoint a Carbon Lead: Likely from the HSEQ or Operations team.
• Use Tools: Carbon calculators tailored to construction (e.g. CIRIA’s C-Calc, OneClick LCA).
• Annual Reporting: Publish progress in a sustainability section of your company website or tender responses.
________________________________________
8. Alignment with Industry & Government Standards
This plan aligns with:
• PAS 2080 (Carbon management in infrastructure)
• Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) guidance
• Considerate Constructors Scheme environmental best practices

9. Timeline Summary
Year Milestone
2025 Start EV fleet transition, site waste segregation across all sites
2027 20% green-certified materials used
2030 100% renewable electricity at HQ/yard, supplier engagement begins
2035 50% emissions reduction across all scopes
